All-on-4 Treatment Concept
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a modern treatment for replacing missing teeth. They provide a unique alternative to traditional bridges and dentures, giving you a long-term, even permanent solution to tooth loss. Implants involve the use of small titanium posts to provide support for dental restorations. The posts are surgically implanted into your jawbone, where your bone fuses to the posts and stabilizes them within your jaw to hold your new teeth securely in place.
Tooth Loss and Your Jawbone
Your teeth perform many important jobs. One of the lesser known roles of your teeth is the role that they play in the strength of your jawbone. Every time you chew, your tooth roots stimulate your jawbone. This stimulation tells your body to send essential nutrients to the bone and surrounding areas. Following tooth loss, stimulation is lost. When this happens, fewer nutrients are sent. Over time, the bone weakens and loses mass. Dental implant posts replace your missing tooth roots and help to restore stimulation to your jawbone. This aids in stopping and preventing bone loss in your jaw.
What is the All-on-4 Treatment Concept?
For dental implants to integrate properly, you need to have sufficient bone mass remaining in your jaw. If you are missing an entire arch of teeth, whether your upper or lower arch, a full arch restoration typically requires 6 to 8 implant posts. If you are missing too much bone mass, however, the bone may not be able to successfully support these posts. Even if one post fails, the entire restoration can fail. In most cases, insufficient bone mass can be restored with a bone graft. This, however, requires additional surgery with additional recovery time and extra costs.
We can help to replace a full arch of missing teeth without the need for a bone graft first. This is done with a treatment called All-on-4. With this treatment, your arch of replacement teeth is supported by only four implant posts, instead of 6 to 8. These posts are placed specifically within your jaw to maximize contact between them and your jawbone. Two posts are placed vertically at the front of the mouth, where there is naturally more bone mass present. The other two posts are placed at the back of the jaw, one on each side. These posts are inserted at a 45-degree angle. In addition to maximizing contact, this angle of the upper jaw helps to avoid piercing the sinus cavities.
