How to Recognize a Dental Abscess

Posted on 11/25/2019 by Dr. Chad Rebhun
How to Recognize a Dental AbscessA dental abscess is a pocket of pus that forms on your gums an is associated with an infected tooth. There are two kinds of abscesses and they are a periapical abscess and a periodontal abscess. The former is formed at the tip of the tooth rot whereas the latter affects the bone next to the rotten tooth.

How to Spot an Abscess

Often an abscess will form a pimple-like bump on your gums. If pus comes out when squeezed, you can be fairly confident it is an abscess. Other symptoms include pain, jaw pain, pain when you chew trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling, gum redness, swollen lymph nodes, bad taste, and fever. Some things that could cause an abscess are cracked teeth, gum disease, or a deep cavity in one of your teeth. If you have an abscess, it is important to remember it will not get better on its own and you must see a dentist to fix it.

Treatment of an Abscess

Surgery may be required to drain the abscess of fluids and during which time your dentist will most likely prescribe you antibiotics. They will not cure the abscess, but they will help stop the spread of infection from moving to other parts of your body. If the tooth is savable the dentist may perform a root canal that would stabilize the tooth and remove any of the infected root pulp. If nothing can be done to save the tooth, then the dentist may recommend extracting the tooth and potentially replacing it with an implant in the future. After treatment, the dentist will recommend a good oral hygiene routine to prevent any further infections.
