Things to Keep In Mind When Having IV Sedation for an Oral ProcedureThere are many different types of sedation that you can turn to when having a dental procedure. The type of sedation you use will depend on the type of oral procedure you have done and the need you have for sedation.

The right choice of sedation can make it easier for you to undergo a procedure and can help improve the results of the [procedure. If you get a procedure done that requires IV sedation, there are some things you need to know.

What is IV Sedation?

IV sedation is a good solution for people that have anxiety or fear when they go to our office. It is often referred to as conscious sedation. This puts it in the middle of sedation that where you are fully aware and awake and sedation where you are fully asleep. When under the influence of IV sedation, you are still awake, but you are not fully aware of what happens around you. IV sedation involves administering the medicine through a vein. The advantages of IV sedation include its ability to work quickly and safely and it is easy to adjust the dose as needed.

Preparing for IV Sedation

There are several things you should do before undergoing IV sedation. You should avoid eating or drinking for 8 hours before you receive the sedation. IV sedation does not put you fully asleep, but it will leave you groggy for a period of time after the procedure. Because of that, we always recommend that you have someone accompany you on your visit and have them or someone else drive you home after your appointment.

Some medications can impact the way that IV sedation works. It is important to make us aware of any medications you take. It is possible that you may need to stop some medications for a period of time before the appointment.
