Dental Surgery Can Help with Restoring an Injured Face

Posted on 12/21/2020 by Dr. Chad Rebhun
Dental Surgery Can Help with Restoring an Injured FaceTraumatic injuries to the face, mouth, teeth, and jaw can occur as the result of car accidents, assaults, sports-related injuries, workplace accidents, slips and falls, or other incidents. These injuries can range in severity from a chipped tooth to a knocked-out tooth or broken jaw. If you have sustained a facial injury, our surgeons can help.

What to Do If You Are Injured

The first thing you should do after receiving a traumatic dental or facial injury is seek emergency care as soon as possible. An emergency dentist or endodontist will perform a thorough examination to determine the extent of the damage and develop a plan for treatment. If surgery is necessary, they will most likely refer you to our office.

How Are Facial Injuries Treated?

Your exact treatment depends on the type and severity of injury you sustained. For minor chips in teeth, the broken piece may be able to be reattached, or the chip can be filled in using a dental filling. More extensive cracks and fractures will most likely need to be repaired using crowns or veneers, and if the tooth pulp has been damaged, a root canal will probably be necessary. For teeth that have been split, dislodged, or knocked out completely, treatment could involve stabilization, splints, and potentially tooth extraction followed by crown placement.

For more severe trauma to the jaw or face, surgery is usually necessary. You may have broken bones in your face that need to be repaired, damage to your soft tissues that calls for tissue grafting, lacerations that require plastic surgery, or even nerve damage that can only be fixed with surgery. Surgical intervention as soon as possible will ensure that your face heals properly and prevent long-term complications. Call our office right away if you need treatment for a traumatic dental or facial injury.
