It is important to have a balanced and nutritious diet all the time, however after oral surgery or an oral procedure it can be tough to find foods that are comfortable and safe to eat, especially those that are nutritious. Depending on the oral surgery, a normal recovery diet consists of liquid or soft foods as to not damage the work that has been done or the vulnerable areas of the mouth.
Foods to Have During Recovery
Not only does the texture of a food have an impact during recovery, but foods containing tomatoes, onions, pepper, and other spices can be irritating to vulnerable parts of the mouth. It is important to also consider the tastes you like, buying foods that fit the criteria during recovery, but that aren't enjoyable to you will make it less likely that you stick to the plan. Some liquid nutrition to consider includes fruit smoothies, pureed soups, puddings, gelatin, yogurts, and other soft foods. There are many recipes on the internet for healthy and tasteful soups for you to enjoy. When enjoying liquid foods, it is important to refrain from using a straw, because it can put unnecessary strain on the mouth. As you mouth improves, soft foods may be an option. Soft foods that can be great are cooked vegetables, soft meats, mashed foods, oatmeal, and cooked pasta. Ripened softer fruits such as bananas, applesauce, and baked apples can be great additions.
Recovery from oral surgery may take some time, but there is no reason you can't enjoy your diet. When preparing soft or liquid foods, it is important to make sure you're getting enough protein, which could mean simply adding a protein source to your food. Protein powder, plain yogurt, and cottage cheese are all easy to add to a meal. Other foods that have protein are soft fish, tofu, and scrambled eggs.
