Early detection of impacted canines is important so that we can make sure they get treated properly and cause the least amount of discomfort possible.

A Glimpse of an Impacted Teeth

In the case of an impacted tooth, usually, the tooth is blocked from erupting fully, getting stuck in the socket. This is most often the case for upper canines. You use your canines to bite, tear off food, and to help all of your teeth stay in the right place in your bite. Most cases of impacted teeth are hereditary. However, some are caused by outside influences, such as a cyst, pericoronitis, teeth that are overcrowded,or similar problems.

There are also multiple types of impactions to think about. Some are angular, others are horizontal, we see some as vertical impaction, and yet others are considered partial eruptions. These can lead to pain, swollen gums, and trouble opening up your mouth. Many people with impaction suffer from bad breath or a bad taste in their mouth, and a lot also get swollen lymph nodes. Impacted teeth can lead to oral problems, bone loss, and the reabsorption of the roots of your teeth or the teeth next to the impacted tooth.

Oral exams are the best way to check for impacted teeth. However, we can also use x-rays to detect them. We will look at the tooth or the impaction area, plus feel around to see what we can do about the tooth. Some people can have their impacted teeth pulled into their proper positions, while others will need those teeth extracted. However, treatment of the tooth is essential for the overall health of your mouth. Ignoring the impaction typically leads to one of the following issues: gum disease, infections of the mouth, tumor growth, or tooth decay.

Impacted Teeth Can Be Treated

While you cannot prevent an impacted tooth, you can diagnose and treat it. The earlier the problem is diagnosed, the easier it usually is to treat. Sometimes surgery is necessary to treat the tooth, while other times, extraction is the only safe option. You need a full exam done to figure out which method of treatment will be right for your mouth.
