Oral Cancer Screening or Biopsy

Everyone knows that early detection of any disease or serious medical condition can make a big difference regarding treatment options and recovery. However, an early diagnosis will only be possible if you are actively taking steps to monitor your oral and overall health or go for regular checkups and exams.

This is why we believe that having an annual oral cancer screening is something that everyone should be doing. If anything questionable is found, then performing a biopsy should be the next step. The goal is to identify any potential problem as early as possible. This way, we can help determine the best course of action to try and manage the condition as best we can. Here at Optimum Oral Surgery Group, we utilize the latest technological and procedural advancements to try and provide our patients with the best chance at overcoming or managing major oral health conditions, such as oral cancer.

A Thorough Examination Is Key

There is no way to determine if you have oral cancer until you have an oral cancer screening and/or biopsy done. You can look online at all of the symptoms that you want to, but until you get an actual diagnosis from our office, you are just causing yourself unnecessary anxiety. There are several factors that go into oral cancer, such as alcohol, tobacco, drug use, as well as genetic factors and family history.

However, there are a couple of indicators you should on the lookout for at home. If you have white or red patches in the mouth, chronic sore throat, lumps or bumps on the insides of the mouth, a wound that does not seem to want to heal, and difficulty in chewing or swallowing, are all signs that something is amiss. It might not necessarily point to oral cancer, but until you come into our office for an examination and consultation, there is no way to tell what is going on.

During an oral cancer screening, a visual examination of the insides of the mouth, tongue, and lips is conducted. If there is a suspicious area in the mouth, a special dye is used to help us get a closer look. If there seems to be something out of the ordinary, a biopsy will likely be done. This will require the removal of a very tiny piece of the surrounding tissue for examination in the laboratory. Again, we can not stress enough how important early detection is, so the sooner you can come in to see us, the better.

You Are Not Going To Be Alone

We understand just how scary an oral cancer screening and biopsy can be, which is why we will do everything we can to make you as comfortable as possible. We will keep you informed of what is going on every step of the way and update you on our findings as soon as we get them. If you do have oral cancer, we will work with you to find a solution.
