Instructions on the Use of Your Prescription Medication


Prescription medication instructions at Optimum Oral Surgery Group, in Moorestown, NJYou may have been given several prescriptions for medication to make your recovery more comfortable.

Penicillin, Clindamycin (Cleocin) or Amoxicillin


This is an antibiotic to decrease the chance of infection. Take this as soon as you can. Follow the instructions on the bottle and finish all the medication.

Decadron (dexamethasone)


This is a steroid to keep the amount of swelling to a minimum. Take the first dose at bedtime on the day of surgery then follow the instructions for the next several days.

Ibuprofen (motrin, advil)


Advil liquigel is preferred: see instructions below.

Tylenol (acetaminophen)


See instructions below.

Vicodin (hydrocodone with acetominophen) or other narcotic pain medication

PAIN SEVERITY

RECOMMENDED PAIN MEDICATION REGIMEN

Mild Ibuprofen 400 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain
Mild to Moderate Ibuprofen 400-600 mg every 6 hours as needed for pain
Moderate to Severe Ibuprofen 400-600 mg with Tylenol 500mg every 6 hours as needed for pain
Severe Ibuprofen (400-600 milligrams) with Vicodin every 6 hours

The maximum dose of Tylenol (acetaminophen) is 3,000 mg per day. You should avoid Tylenol in other medications.
The maximum dose of Ibuprofen is 2,400 mg per day
